Imposter Syndrome & Self-Worth for entrepreneurs
Imposter syndrome doesn't show up because you're unqualified. It shows up because the gap between your skill and your confidence never gets addressed directly, and because most people carry old beliefs about worth that were formed long before they became entrepreneurs. Across these conversations, the diagnosis is remarkably consistent: self-doubt isn't a personality flaw, it's an unresolved internal pattern, often rooted in childhood validation-seeking, past failure, or a nervous system stuck bracing for judgment that mostly isn't coming.
Where the guests diverge is on the fix. Some argue the work is cognitive and structural — name the false belief, write down the worry, reframe the thought, track the money. Others argue it's somatic and won't respond to logic at all — the body stores the wound, and you have to process sensation before insight sticks. A few go further still, treating it as identity-level work: astrology as a blueprint, hypnotherapy to access the subconscious, individuation as a Jungian project. None of these approaches contradict each other so much as target different layers of the same problem — thought, feeling, body, and story all need attention, and which one you start with depends on where you're stuck.
The one claim nobody disputes: achievement does not resolve self-worth. Founders with real revenue, real exits, real recognition still describe feeling like frauds, still guilty for not feeling fulfilled, still performing confidence they don't feel. Worth has to be built or remembered separately from the scoreboard, or the scoreboard will just keep resetting the bar.
What holds across every conversation
- •Notice the gap between your skill level and your confidence level explicitly — naming it as a gap, not a verdict on your competence, takes the sting out of it.
- •Write worries down with actual probabilities attached instead of letting them loop; a fear stated as a number is easier to challenge than a fear left vague.
- •Compartmentalize problems instead of letting them merge into one undifferentiated mass of dread — each issue alone is manageable; stacked together, none of them feel solvable.
- •Build self-trust in small increments, the way you'd add weight on a bar, rather than expecting a single leap of faith to fix your nervous system's caution.
- •Track your money, your output, your actual track record — lack of awareness of your own real numbers is a major, fixable driver of chronic self-doubt.
- •If a wellness fix (a massage, a pep talk, a win) only helps for 24 hours, that's a signal you're soothing the symptom, not the belief underneath it — go looking for the belief.
Why success doesn't fix the feeling
Outward wins — revenue, exits, recognition — routinely fail to touch the internal sense of not being enough, and several guests explain why that gap persists even at the top.
“When our internal sense of self is not aligned with what's going on, usually we have a lot of success on the outside and we just literally need to upgrade what's going on on the inside. So our sense of self hasn't matched the great, great things we've done on the outside.”

“They'll usually almost always will come out, why am I not happy? Or why do I not feel fulfilled when I've done all these things? But they really feel guilty even bringing it up because they know they're fortunate and they know that they have everything that most people want and desire.”

“Some of the people that are the wealthiest, like you take Hollywood and some of these movie stars, and some of these people are just— they have everything you would think you would want in life and they're still unhappy. I mean, think about Robin Williams. Why would he kill himself? He was the happy guy. He was always smiling and he was always cracking jokes. Why would he hang himself? That makes no sense. Well, it makes sense when you understand depression and you understand addiction.”

“some people express like the exhaustion they have for carrying all the damn masks way too fucking long, if I can say it that way, because that's how they feel. They're like, and here I am, I've got my own company, right? It is being successful, and I'm still not free.”

The confidence-skill gap
Nearly every entrepreneur describes the same mismatch: their actual competence outpaces their belief in it, and the self-talk in that gap is often brutal.
“Most of us suffer from imposter syndrome, right? Your skill level's going like this, your confidence level's going like that, and there's this gap.”

“I talk to myself sometimes and I would never talk to a friend like that ever. I forgot my flash drive. You piece of shit. Like, how are you not prepared for this? You know? And it's trying to stop yourself from doing that.”

“Imagine you want that person to have it be 80% positive or 70% positive. You have to start changing the way you talk to yourself, cuz of course you're gonna have imposter syndrome if everything you say to yourself is like, oh, you're not good enough. Oh, she's smarter than you. Oh, that outfit's better. Oh, you shouldn't be here. Oh, what are you doing? Like, of course you're not gonna feel good.”

Where the belief actually comes from
Self-doubt has a source, usually early and usually unconscious — a validation-seeking pattern, a family script about money or worth, or an old failure the body never released.
“What I see mostly is typically at an early age, some sense of need to seek the validation, sense of where that really served, and the continual path of seeking validation... And when you don't have a sense of, I'm good enough whether I do that or not, eventually you're left with, yeah, but what if I don't do that?”

“We're responding to a present moment situation through the lens of a past experience. So, if growing up, every time I got a B on a report card, my parents punished me or criticized me, or I was only praised when I was perfect and achieved the most, I'm carrying that story from childhood in my body.”

Body first, or mind first
There's real disagreement here — some guests insist the mind can talk itself out of a false belief, others insist the body has to process the sensation before any reframe will hold.
“Our behaviors and our thoughts are actually a response to our nervous system state. So if my nervous system, if my body is going into this state of stress or anxiety, and I'm feeling all that activation... that's going to impact how I'm thinking about a situation and therefore how I'm behaving in a situation.”

“If emotions are energy in motion, if that feeling could move, how would you want to move with that emotional energy? Now their body's wisdom is kicking in because our bodies know how to metabolize emotion. Our mind gets in the way.”

“It's really hard for judgment and curiosity to coexist, 'cause if we can truly embody curiosity and say, huh, where does that pattern come from? Why do I think that? What am I afraid is going to happen? Then that's where we're really opening a door rather than judging something and closing a door.”

“I can have a crappy day and go get a massage and feel good for 24 hours, and the next day, if I did not address that crappy whatever's going on inside of me, it's back. So I can do things to feel good, but they're not solving the internal.”

Nobody in the room is thinking about you
A recurring, almost blunt correction to social anxiety and fear of judgment: the audience you're bracing for is mostly imaginary, and most people are too busy worrying about themselves.
“Deserving isn't earned, it's remembered, right? And so nobody in that room cares about you. Nobody in that room thinks about you. They're thinking the same thing whoever this person is thinking. They're thinking the same thing. What if they find out?”

“Let me just say one thing, and I'll say it as hard as I can: people really don't care. They don't care about you as much as you think they do. Your friends do, but most people don't give a blank about you until you go into their world and make a difference. Everybody has that gift. It's just they have to believe they have a gift, and most people don't believe they have a gift, but they do.”

“With social media today, we have a free global world stage. If we press public on our profile, you are a public figure, exposed. And so many people fear that, and it is What I noticed, not because they don't think they are good enough if they stay in their own bubble, because we all deep down know that what we bring to the table, what we bring out there can change someone's life.”

Practical moves that actually shift it
Beyond insight, the guests offer concrete mechanics — small enough to start today — for rebuilding self-trust and reducing the loop of doubt.
“I'm not going to go into the gym on day 1 and try to lift 100 pounds off the rack. You know, I'm going to go with a 5 or 10-pound weight. And then over time, I'm going to slowly increase the amount of weight that I can lift until I get to that 100-pound weight.”
Cognitive & Embodied Awareness with Carissa Karban · 22:30· listen →
“So the answer then is compartmentalization, and that's the shoeboxes. So the more compartmentalized these problems are, the less overwhelming they become. So I got this problem. That by itself is not overwhelming. And I got this problem. That by itself is not overwhelming. It's only when I let them all merge together that I get into trouble. So what I say to people that are overwhelmed, don't lump, compartmentalize, use your shoeboxes.”

“Even a successful entrepreneur has failed 1 billion times and been rejected 1 trillion times. Like, I have been rejected way more times than I have been accepted. I have failed way more times than I've been successful. At this point, I'm like almost immune to it, at least for the smaller ones.”

“I think we feel like I'm failing if I'm not doing it every day. I set a goal and I want to be a meditator, but I do it for a month and then I drop off. So I must not be a meditator. And it's like, well, that was for me years of that before it just slowly became that thing. And that's okay.”
